LGBTQ Pride, Fathers, Summertime, and Graduation

This June, we're featuring books to celebrate LGBTQ pride since it's LGBTQ Pride month. For Father's Day, we have a display that showcases books that center on father-child relationships. Since summer is right around the corner, we have a third display filled with sunny, summertime books. Lastly, as we bid farewell to our 8th graders and seniors, we our displaying books with graduation in their plot lines. Come on in and check out a book!

Welcome Back!
Mrs. Caneva and Mr. Atilano are excited to see all of you back in our library. We have a new space entirely dedicated to the Writing Center where the back computer lab used to be. We also have some great new titles to check out. Lastly, check out a book on one of our displays. In September, we are featuring books about Race in America due to the events in Charlottesville, VA. Also, we are displaying books about Hurricanes, severe weather, and survival for you to investigate as the events with Hurricane Harvey in Houston, TX unfold. In addition, we are showcasing books to celebrate Latino Heritage month which runs from September 15th-October 15th. And finally, banned book week takes place September 24th-30th, and we're showcasing banned books (because we're rebels like that)!

Mothers' Day, Mental Health Awareness, Memorial Day, and Asian American Heritage Month
In May, we have displays with books about mothers for Mothers' Day, mental health and mental illnesses for Mental Health Awareness, soldiers for Memorial Day, and Asian Americans for Asian American Heritage Month. We are featuring four displays this month. The first two attempt to get you in the holiday spirit with holiday books and prepare you for the cold winter with winter-themed books. This month to help ring in Halloween, we're featuring Spooky Books and, possibly even more amazing, we're hosting the Writing Center's Haunted House. We also have fall sports books and books to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month on display. Our final display case holds books that pertain to the upcoming election. Come on in and read one today!
A New School Year

Come in and check out our new look and a great book! We've added some more seating for your comfort and collaboration. We're also displaying banned books for banned book week, books to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month, books to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, and books about fall sports. New Endeavors
As another new year begins this January, new happenings are apparent in the library as well. We've moved out two more free-standing shelves to accommodate more students; we're just awaiting seating. Four new displays are up as well: Martin Luther King Jr., Cold Books, Winter Sports, and January Authors' Birthdays. Lastly, I won a CPS lending library grant to help begin a Maker Space. We're featuring Ozobots this month, which are small robots that are coded by color.

Luck, Irish, Women's History, and Spring
During National Reading Month, we have a lot of books on display! With St. Patrick's Day coming soon, books with a lucky theme and celebrating the Irish are on display. It's also Women's History Month, so a display is dedicated to powerful women. And even though it's still a Chicago winter outside, the first day of Spring is arriving, and we have a spring/March display as well. Check one out from a display today!

Love, Presidents, and African American History
February is a big month for displays in our library. We're displaying books about African American History, presidents, and love. Also, a new shipment of over 100 titles have arrived to the shelves in Realistic Fiction and Graphic Novels. We've also won a matching grant from CPS, so we'll be getting even more books in soon!

March into Spring
It may still feel like winter outside, but spring is actually going to happen this month! To celebrate its arrival and National Reading Month, we are featuring three displays of interesting titles. Our first display is a mix of March books--lucky books to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, books by Irish authors, books about spring, and even a title for the Ides of March. Our second display showcases titles to commemorate Women's History month, and our third features books about baseball which opens at the end of the month and college basketball for March Madness. So, grab a title to read in March!

Hi LMSA Staff and Students,
It's that time of year again, and you may be noticing that things look a little different in the library this year. Mrs. Caneva, hired last year as an English teacher, is now the librarian. We also have a new assistant, Mr. Atilano. We hope to build onto the great foundation that Mrs. Terry and Mrs. Urbina built over the years, and we cannot wait to start the school year off with you!
